These days Tom Peters and Seth Godin define the 'rules for success in 5 (or 19) words' and "8 questions and a why" respectively.
I just love such approaches, they focus the relevant, they demonstrate someone has thought about the optimum, and thought about the unifying goal.
My path to Distinctive Leadership (as I call the prerequisite of success) consists of just 3 simple (but quite challenging) steps - and it does not matter, if you are an individual, a brand or a company:
01 - independence
02 - brilliance
03 - relevance
This translates for the individual leadership personality in life or in business:
01 - Awake!
02 - Grow!
03 - Inspire (the Next)!
For a brand:
01 - Brand Ambition
02 - Brand (& Team)Culture
03 - Brand Engagement
For a business or corporation:
01 - Awake the Individual!
02 - De/Construct Culture!
03 - Create Pure Purpose!

My 3 questions, every individual, brand or corporation should ask themselves:
01 - I want?
02 - I can?
03 - I am?
"Outgrow Yourself, Inspire the World!"
Or - instead of inhaling the above - just listen to the words of the unforgotten Anita Roddick, Founder of 'The Body Shop':
"Success ... is consistently Learning How to Do Things better!"
(in 'Good Business! - Leadership, Flow, and the Making of Meaning' by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)
The connection to success and the power of all these approaches?
ACT! - DON'T TALK!
